FROM THE COUNCIL
July 23, 2020 Minutes
Attendees:
Pam Thomas, Lori Albers, Judy Murphy, Barb Stoffers, Donna Swanson, Gary Wattenberg
Opening discussion: The Yordy's grand-son is living with them at the present time and he would like to park his car in the downstairs parking area. Council approved the request and will contact Mike and Connie with approval.
A friend of Pam's works with a youth group ("Kids At Their Best") who asked if they could spend an overnight at the Church some time in August. The group's plans are to do some hiking and participate in Leadership Training. Council approved the request. When a date has been decided upon Jimmy will be notified of the overnight stay.
The next item of business was planning for Zion's 125th Anniversary. At our Sunday Zoom worship service some very good ideas and suggestions were made to get things started. Because we don't know when the Coronavirus problems will end, suggestions were made which would be a good way to start the Celebration - beginning in this September and continuing through September of 2021. So -- to praise and give thanks to our God, His Son, and the Holy Spirit for all of the gifts and guidance through the past 125 years and to honor the Swedish Founders, the Pastors, the members and friends who have served the communities of Clear Creek County through Zion's history, we will begin our celebration with focusing on kindness and gratitude.
To notice and strive to be KIND in any manner for any reason, keep track of the situation (keep it between yourself and your God). The aim of your being aware of a needed kindness, or just out of love and care is to track the number of times you make it happen - 125 days in the year.
Focusing on and noticing GRATITUDE when you see it or feel it in your own life can be a way of thanks for what has been given to you - a way to honor our God, our Church, Pastors, members and friends. Tally up each time you feel gratitude - a kindness awareness to yourself - 125 days of the year.
Council meets the first part of August to finalize a way to track what we are doing. A tree made of construction paper will be made up and placed on a wall. We will have construction paper leaves available (as many as you need) to attach to the tree to show our KINDNESS and GRATITUDE growing. More information and clarity after the August meeting.
Respectfully Submitted
Donna Swanson

ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2020 WELCOME TO ZION! VOL XX ISSUE III
March 1, 2020
A View from the Pew
AND ONE FOR GOD
We simply couldn’t believe it!
New Orleans is no different from other cities today, so
when we were making like the tourists we tended to
’keep our dukes up” to make sure we weren’t being
hornswoggled.
Therefore, when an artist told us, “No, don’t give me
any money for the painting, we knew there had to be
a catch.
There was.
But it was quite a nice catch.
That morning we had made fill circle, so to speak, of
historical Jackson Square, trying to select a painting
to purchase from many attached to the black iron
fence surrounding lovely St. Louis Cathedral, built in
1794. There were beautiful oils priced in the hundreds,
but none of those spoke to us as we feel a
painting should.
Then, at the last corner, cattycorner to the famous
café du Monde, we came upon Arthur Corliss and his
lovely wildlife drawings. We wanted the egret in
white ink on a brown background and matted in a
soft orange.
.It was eight dollars. We said we’d take it, and Arthur
Corliss began to wrap it..
But when I produced my wallet he held up one hand
as one might in taking an oath. “No, don’t pay me for
it. You are my tenth customer this morning, and ask
every tenth customer to give the money to the church
of his choice, regardless of the price of painting
chosen.”
”
(Continued next column)
* * * * *
AND ONE FOR GOD (continued)
“You’re kidding!” we said. “You mean you’ll
let us walk away with the painting and not pay
you anything at all?”
“
That’s right”.
But we live in Virginia.”
“Makes no difference. Any church anywhere.”
For Arthur Corliss this is “a way of life” He
says, “I want to do my share, and this is my
way of doing it.”
He sits there in his folding chair from early morn
to noon, creating scenes on his easel-nine for
him and one for God. Afternoons he drives for a
limousine company.
As we walked toward the café du Monde with
our treasure we still half expected to hear him
call out , “Wait a minute ! There’s no charge for
the painting , but the matting will cost you
something.”
But he was for real.
We ate three of the beignets (little French
donuts served hot hot and doused with powdered
sugar) with our coffee and enjoyed their
warmth- an the warmth of Arthur Corliss--
across the street, doing his share.
And, oh yes, we dropped his contributions in the
collection plate of our church at home, a long
distance tithe.

. DID YOU KNOW
An easy way to support Loaves and Fishes
Did you know you can bay a Safeway “gift card”
from Loaves and Fishes?
It’s pretty easy to use.
You just keep track of the value of the groceries in
your cart. When you get to the check=out you ask
the cashier to load that amount onto your gift card
And then use the card to pay for your groceries. That
way Loaves and Fishes gets a small percentage of
the cost of your groceries. It’s a small amount, but
we all buy groceries and together we can make a
nice contribution to help feed our friends and
neighbors. Talk to Pam Thomas if you want to learn
more about it..
